About the event

Join us for a lively and thoughtful conversation between Quaker historian Tom Hamm and Windy Cooler, convener of the Friends Incubator for Public Ministry. Together they will explore the lives and legacies of early Quaker public ministers, drawing from Tom’s new lecture series on our blog. They will discuss the work and witness of Joseph Hoag, Lucretia Mott, Priscilla Hunt Cadwallader, George Fox, Elias Hicks, Joseph John Gurney, and John Wilber, among others.
Through these stories we will consider how Friends of earlier centuries struggled with discernment, truth telling, and love of community, and what their examples might mean for Friends in our own time.
Queries for reflection:
George Fox: How do we recognize the prophetic impulse when it rises among us? What does it mean to live as if the Kingdom is already here?
Elias Hicks: How do we listen deeply enough to Spirit that we can remain faithful even when truth divides…
